George Springer Just Made The Best Catch Of The Year And It's Only April 25th

Okay maybe catch of the year is a little dramatic with approximately 5 months left in the season but even so that's a fucking preposterous catch. Off the bat, that looked like a clear stand up double from the former Purdue backstop. Alas it was not because George Springer has coverage comparable to the Pacific Ocean. Dude is an absolute beast.

I wrote earlier today about Jeremy Pena being the new SS for the Astros and how cool it is because he's just a dude from Providence Rhode Islan and Maine University. Well to me George Springer is one of the best of the same pedigree. I know he was a massive draft prospect but just coming from UCONN and panning out is so sweet to me. Him, Nick Ahmed, Matt Barnes and Mike Olt comprise one of the coolest college baseball draft classes of all time. Crazy every single one of them made it to the big leagues and even crazier that Mike Olt had the most pop. Just a bunch of plus-plus tools walking around the UCONN campus. Who would've thought?

I guess it doesn't matter. George Springer could've played for DeVry and it wouldn't make a lick of difference. His worst season in his life was 2018. He posted a 114 OPS+ en route to being an All Star for a team that won 103 games. And it was, according to the analytic ratios, his worst full season. Must be nice.

Really though let this just serve as a reminder that (a) George Springer exists and (b) he plays for the Toronto Blue Jays. Only half a season last year since signing the deal and a very under-the-radar kinda brand. Call that my midwest bias but honestly so few people are paying attention to George Springer relative to the focus he deserves. So here's a blog about his unreal play tonight and a sincere hope that we get to talk about George for all 162 this year. The world's a much better place with him comfortably patrolling a big league centerfield.

Now if you'll excuse me. Max Scherzer is murdering the Cardinals.

It's awesome.
