Thankfully Somehow FIFA's Dumbass Plan Of Having The World Cup Every 2 Years Seems To Be Dead

[Source] - FIFA's strongly contested plans to hold the World Cup on a biennial basis are not on the agenda for this week's congress but talks are instead set to focus on alternative proposals, sources have told Reuters.

While FIFA delegates will hear an update on consultations over changes to the international match calendar, the controversial proposal to hold the World Cup every two years, instead of the current four-year rotation, will not be voted on.

Thank God. There's simply no reason to have the World Cup every 2 years. It's perfect the way it is. Well outside of massive corruption, the World Cup is set up perfectly. I love everything about the qualifying process, the intrigue of watching it all unfold and the 4 year wait. There's no reason to have it two years. We have the Euros and all other continental events between the World Cups. That's what you need to keep growing.

They are apparently exploring other options:

Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF which governs the game in North and Central America and the Caribbean, has floated the idea of holding a different tournament in the slot that had been envisaged for the additional World Cup.

Montagliani, who is also a FIFA vice-president, has suggested that either a tournament loosely based on the old Confederations Cup, which has not been held since 2017, or a global version of the Nations League format, used by UEFA and CONCACAF, could be a solution.

This is an idea I can actually get behind. I enjoyed the Confederations Cup. It was a nice little appetizer for the World Cup. It also gave us the run in South Africa. We got out of a group over Italy, beat Spain in the semifinals then lost to Brazil 3-2 in the semifinals. I still remember watching that. Give me that back since the Confederations Cup is no longer a thing.

I say it all the time but there's something different about international soccer. Club soccer, I get it's not for everyone. But if you say hey we all get to watch the US and go to a bar and cheer for the same team? It's awesome. I look at it how we do basketball. Obviously we have Olympics basketball every four years but there's also the World Cup. It gives us a chance to watch NBA players come together and represent the US. Again, it's a nice break. It doesn't hold the same level as the Olympics, but it's something worth watching. Hell, the US finished 7th at the last World Cup and it helped bring back some of the better players for the Olympics. We need it across all sports.

Hell give me a 16-team Confederations Cup. Give me the top two teams from each confederation and let us cook for a Summer. We know there's not much going on during the summer and if we're going to add some daytime sports it's a win for everyone. Hell I don't even care if it's just the top-16 in the FIFA rankings at a certain date. Just give us something like that instead of a true World Cup.

There's already enough changes going on with the actual World Cup. Remember in 2026 it's going to be 48 teams, not 32. Sure it's more games, who will argue against that. But 32 was just the right number. I can't really explain it more than that. We don't need to add everyone to the World Cup. You have a chance to qualify. Just qualify.

But not voting on this every 2 year World Cup? That's a win. Especially with this quote:

“A biennial World Cup is a no go for everyone in football. I am glad FIFA has realised that as well," said Ceferin.

“We have discussions but, as far as I am concerned, a biennial World Cup is off the table. I am sure we will come to a solution with FIFA soon."

Good. Kill it forever.
