What a beautiful, beautiful game. It was basically perfect. We avoided injury, avoided anything stupid and most importantly are 99.9% locked into a World Cup bid. It would take a 6-goal loss at Costa Rica this week for us not to auto qualify. I'm calling my shot and saying we won't lose by that much.
But you see this is about the Golden Generation. It's here. Look up and down this roster and their ages. We're talking guys like Pulisic, Reyna, both Robinson's, Adams, Musah, Busio, Pepi, Weah, etc. That doesn't include McKennie and Dest who were injured for this window. But that's what we have. We have depth. We have youth. Those guys I listed? Yeah, the oldest one is Miles Robinson at 25. Pretty good!
But this is about the current task at hand. A 5-1 win over Panama, eliminating those bums from the World Cup. It's now a 4-team race for 3 auto bids and the 4th place team going to a playoff. Here's what we're looking at live.
Canada is locked in so it's down to the next 3. Like I said, all we have to do is not lose by 6 at Costa Rica. That's it. Literally can lose 5-0 and move onto the World Cup. I don't care what we do as long as we don't lose by six. It's all about this group though. You can even add in guys like Walker Zimmerman who became a mainstay at the center back spot and will be a starter if healthy at the World Cup. This is the group that saw us fail in 2018 and Gregggggg and US Soccer invested everything in these guys.
Worth it.
This group is already better than Mexico. The last year and a half proved that. This group is already looking like a team that can legit get out of group stage at the World Cup and from there we'll see what happens. Shit gets weird once you're in elimination stage.
This was always the first step. Make the World Cup. We're 5 goals away from that. I need the World Cup parties back in my life. I need everyone in the bar all cheering for the same team. There's nothing like it. It's the one time that we actually all agree on who we're all cheering for.
Wednesday night it should - better be - official. Hit the damn music.
