Because typically "there's an old saying" implies that it's one that is pretty commonly known and well established. It seems to me like this is something that Barry Trotz just came up with on a whim while he was bag skating his team back in '84 after they pissed a win away the night before.
And if this is an originally Barry Trotz saying? Well let me tell ya...it's perfect. The type of quote that deserves to be plastered on motivational posters everywhere.
