A Judge Rules That The Sackler Family, Largely Responsible For Creating The Opioid Epidemic, Has To Pay $6 BILLION

Many people have sent me this link because of the Opioid episode we did on Dogwalk a few weeks back

Six billion dollars. A TON of money. So much money that I can't even really comprehend how much money it is or what it would mean to lose it. A hefty fine, no doubt.

The Sackler family comprised of 40 members was reportedly worth $13B at their peak (on paper) and now it is said that they have about 11 billion left. So let's assume they pay this fine in cash and it leaves the family with a combined net worth of $5Bn. If you divide $5Bn by 40 you are left with a sum of $125M per person. Congratulations to the Sacklers, they all still have won a HUGE powerball amount of money on the graves of nearly a million Americans. The Sacklers are still flying private to their mansions and taking a Bentleys to the port where their super yacht is docked. All of them are.

You know what would be a better punishment...jail. I think jail is a hell of a deterrent. Like...maybe someone in the boardroom would've raised their hand and said "hey, I know we don't actually care about murdering people because the bottomline looks incredible, but...fuck this I am not willing to go to jail". I have never been to jail, but all reports are that jail sucks. Sucks hard. So take the 5 billion, but you know...also take their freedom for like 25 years. That seems fair and appropriate. Better than simply being like "pay this GIANT sum of money that won't really change your day to day life that much". They made so much money dealing drugs that losing $5Bn just doesn't hurt THAT much. If that is the case then you need to put people in jail. Call it capitalistic manslaughter and give them 30 years. Should be a life sentence, but I am willing let them off the hook with just 30 years if they paid the $5Bn and that $5Bn went to prevent future opioid loss of life which hit an all-time high in 2020.
