James Gunn's 'Peacemaker' (starring John Cena) dropped its first three episodes on HBO Max yesterday, and while the series has had a pretty good buzz about it overall, I don't think anybody was prepared for the ridiculous opening credits sequence we would be treated to nearly right away.
It's been the talk of social media for the last 24 hours, with everybody (rightfully) raving about how funny and absurd it is....
I've only watched the first episode so far, but I really loved it. It's laugh out loud funny, ridiculous and brash, it features some legitimately awesome action, and John Cena's enthusiasm/passion for the role is palpable in every scene - just as it is in the intro. It's directed by James Gunn too, so you know it looks great, and the soundtrack is fire. It's like 'The Suicide Squad' meets 'The Boys' in my mind....and I fucking love 'The Boys'.
Plus, there's a Bald Eagle named Eagly who is a fucking adorable badass….
You don't have to see 'The Suicide Squad' to watch 'Peacemaker' - there's a great little 'Previously On…' segment that recaps Cena's whole arc in that movie to start the show - but I would recommend checking it out anyway! It's a really fresh, raunchy superhero story that improves upon the first 'Suicide Squad' in every way, shape, and form; and one of my favorite movies of 2021.
