Celtics Legend Sam Jones Has Passed Away At The Age Of 88
While he may not get the same sort of public notoriety as some of the other Celtics legends, make no mistake about it, Sam Jones was that dude. You could make the case he was one of the best two guards for the first half of the NBA's history. Honestly, that position didn't even really exist until Sam Jones. He mastered the bank shot before that was even a thing people did. A guy who was part of the NBA's 25th, 50th, and 75th Anniversary teams, the list of his accomplishments don't even seem real when you type them all out. The only other player in Celtics history with more rings to his name is Bill Russell. Growing up he was one of my Dad's favorite players and it's really all I heard about. Obviously, I wasn't alive for any of his run, but growing up a fan of this team you learn about the legend of Sam Jones at a very young age
Not to be forgotten, he was also part of one of the most iconic plays in Celtics history
There's a reason he went by the nickname "Mr. Clutch." Sam Jones invented the idea of being clutch. You could make the case that he is one of if not the most clutch player of all time. The guy was just something else
There will absolutely never be another Sam Jones, I think everyone can agree there. A true legend by every definition of the word. This is news that doesn't just sadden the Celtics world, but the entire basketball world. We talk about unicorn players a lot nowadays, and from what I've been told growing up, that's exactly what Sam Jones was.
Rest In Peace.
