BREAKING: The Legend Jim Calhoun Is Retiring From Coaching Basketball (Again)
[Courant] - “You’ve got to know when it’s time,” Calhoun told The Courant Thursday. “We’re a really good team. The program is in great shape, we’re going in the right direction, now’s the time.”
Calhoun, 79, who led the UConn men to three national championships, has had numerous health issues through the years, overcoming cancer and heart disease, but said he and his wife, Pat, are in good health right now.
“Back home in Pomfret, there’s a very happy woman right now,” Calhoun said. “Pat said, ‘I’ve got you back.’”
Jim Calhoun is two things. He's one of the 5 greatest coaches in college basketball history and he's the number 1 press conference guy in the sport. No one will ever be as good as Calhoun when it comes to that. Let's get the hits.
We'll rarely see a 1-2 punch like that. But like I said, he's also one of the top-5 coaches in the history of this game. You can't even really dispute that. What he did in Storrs, Connecticut? Come on. Nobody wants to go to Storrs, Connecticut and he won 3 titles there. He sent countless guys to the pros. Then he decided to retire and became one of my favorite announcers. Why? Because no one could understand half the words he said, but it didn't matter. He would just talk about the game with a smile on his face. He never gave a shit what people thought about it.
So where's he retiring from? A place called St. Joseph's in Connecticut. It used to be an all-girls college until a review in 2016. He was the first ever guy's coach there and went 47-17. Of course he did. He won a conference title in his second year.
