Sony Officially Greenlights "Bad Boys 3" and "Bad Boys 4"

The Wrap - Sony Pictures has unveiled release dates for 16 films for the studio’s 2016 and 2017 slates, including not one but two “Bad Boys” sequels, a Christmas 2016 date for “Jumanji” and a one-year delay for “Uncharted,” which has moved to June 2017.

Slash Film – Sony has officially announced that they will be releasing Bad Boys 3 in February 2017 and Bad Boys 4 in July 2019.

Not much more is known at this time. Sony dated a dozen upcoming films which included the Bad Boys sequels: Bad Boys 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on February 17th 2017, while Bad Boys 4 will hit theaters two years later: on July 3rd 2019.

In June 2015, we learned that writer-director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) was circling the action sequel, while Will Smith and Martin Lawrence were being courted to return. Carnahan was in early talks to rewrite the script by David Guggenheim (Safe House), and possibly direct.

Comedian/actor Martin Lawrence appeared on Conan in August 2014 and announced that Bad Boys 3 was in the works:

“I believe so. Yes. I just talked to Jerry Bruckheimer yesterday and he said its real, they’re working on the script, they’re getting close and it all looks good.”

Let’s get one thing clear off the bat – if it’s not Will Smith and Martin Lawrence coming back, just scrap the entire project. I’ve had enough of these lame ass, half assed, bullshit remakes and reboots and re whatevers. All these sequels and prequels and origin stories all because nobody has an original idea anymore and studios are too terrified of putting something out that doesn’t feature at least 1, if not 6 superheroes and doesn’t have a huge existing fan base. If you’re going to make more Bad Boys, you can’t insult us with just a cash grab – it’s gotta be Will and Martin. The heart and soul of Bad Boys. The friendship and buddy camaraderie you could feel oozing through your TV screen. Hilarious, awesome movies that feature some of these iconic scenes –

[I usually ride or die with Rotten Tomatoes, but let’s be honest – a 43% and a 23% (20 fucking 3?) is an absolute travesty].

Yeah Will has obviously become this megastar and is probably impossible to lock down and convince to do movies –

It’s so funny because we’ll get Sony real excited to make the movie, and then Will [Smith] is off doing two movies. And then, Will will come back and be real excited about it, and Sony will say, ‘Well, maybe it’s not the time for this.’ And then, Ride Along came out and was a big hit, and now they’re all excited to make the movie, but Will is off doing something else. It’s just trying to get everybody together to make it. But, we’re working on the script. We have a lot of faith and hope that we’ll do it.

But you gotta get it done. Divorces don’t pay for themselves.

Also Michael Bay is probably priced out too, and busy working on Transformers 19 while pursuing the Guinness World Record for “most things blown up on a single screen in a single frame,” but Joe Carnahan could be a great replacement –

Carnahan seems like a solid choice to take over as he has experience with big-budget action, thanks to The A-Team, and his resume is full of other macho thrillers like The Grey, Smoking Aces, and Narc.

Fingers crossed it all works out, and doesn’t end up being like Tyler Perry’s Bad Boys 3 starring Marlon Wayans and Kevin Hart .
