“I Hope I Can Be As Strong And Resilient As New York Has Been The Past 20 Years” - 19 Year Old US Open Runner Up Leylah Fernandez Won New York’s Heart Yesterday

Yesterday 18 year old Emma Raducanu etched her name in history becoming the first qualifier male or female to win the US Open. She didn’t drop a set the whole tournament and is clearly on a quick rise to stardom in the sport. While she’s obviously the story, what really stole the show to me was the loser of the match Leylah Fernandez’s speech to the crowd afterwards.

After addressing the loss and what an awesome few weeks it’s been, Leylah took back the mic to speak to the crowd once more. For a 19 year old to have the poise and maturity to say this was…wow.

Want to know who the crowd favorite at the US Open is for the rest of her career? Leylah Fernandez. What an awesome human being.
