Lorde Says Her Entire Discography Is "Drug Themed," And She Wrote Them All Under The Influence

Solar power can only take the mind so far.

New Zealand pop star Lorde has revealed that her albums correlate to the drugs she was using while creating them: Her 2013 debut album, “Pure Heroine,” is alcohol; 2017’s “Melodrama” is MDMA; and her most recent release, “Solar Power,” is cannabis, she told Vogue.

Initially, she had planned for “Solar Power” to be an LSD-themed record.

“I thought I was going to make this big acid record but I don’t think it was an acid album. I had one bad acid experience in this album and was like, ‘Meh, it’s a weed album.’ It’s one of my great weed albums,” she told the New York Times.

I don't want to take away from Lorde's artistic genius and this big revelation, but I think it's pretty clear these albums were drug-fueled. Certainly not in a bad way: I'm on record as very pro-drug (responsibly. if you start fucking your life up, drugs stop being cool) and I 100% think that taking different kinds of drugs open up new passageways in your brain. By "I think," I mean, "it's been confirmed by science that drugs alter your brain." So, why not take advantage of this when you're a musical artist?

Underneath all of that creativity on the surface, there has to be a more complicated and intricate version of that same creativity lying in wait, right? Would we have Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band without LSD? Would we have any of The Weeknd's albums? Would we have ANY Classic Rock songs? Good for Lorde. I love this so much that I might take it upon myself to have a little album + drug pairing party. I'll drink first, have a little MDMA amuse bouche, then close out the night out with a joint to "Stoned At The Nail Salon."
