Dan Campbell Lived His Life With One Basic Rule - House Beers Until The Sun Comes Up So You Don't Let The Boys Down
[The Athletic] - Liucci: (If we had a party at the house) the deal was: “We’re having a party tonight, and nobody’s going to bed until the sun comes up.” Dan was real big on that. “Hey, you gonna let your boys down and go to bed right now? Only two more hours till the sun’s up, I thought that’s what we were gonna do?!”
And you’re dying, but you’re like, “Hey, I guess you’re right, Dan …” You can’t be the one who bails on him. There’s a dozen of us up there, sitting outside having 6 a.m. beers. We’re looking around like, “Oh my god, what are we doing here?”
Lechler: There were plenty of nights where we’d be having a get-together and I would see that look in his eye and just be like, “Oh no.” And, sure enough, (a) little time would go by and here comes Dan: “Hey, Lech, we’re staying up till the sun comes up tonight.” And you’re just … “oh, shit, no.” But you did it for Dan. … When we beat Kansas State in the Big 12 championship, I knew the second that plane landed at home what was gonna happen. Think that one went for about two days.
Dan Campbell at Texas A&M sounds like that guy man. Remember, he had the big time flow and it's absolutely not shocking that he screamed about letting the boys down. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he still lives his life this way. The man probably fears sleep. Probably screams about how he can't get better when he's sleeping therefore just stays up. That said, we all know someone like Dan Campbell at Texas A&M. They are the worst and best at the same time. You know you're in for a good time when you're out with them. You also know that shit can get off the rails fast. You think you're just going out for a few drinks, home before last call and next thing you know you're getting screamed at for trying to go to bed. That happens in your 30s and that hangover is lasting a week. Good luck recovering from not sleeping.
That said in college you can get away with all of this. You can sit there and pressure people into not letting down the boys. It's the ultimate challenge behind just 'I dare you.' You get dared, you're doing something. Plain and simple, especially when you're a moron in college. It's also no surprise that Campbell threw an all-time party after beating Kansas State in the Big 12 title game. That's how it should be. You get a few weeks off before your bowl game, you deserve to have a hell of a party.
Credit to his friends, they realized that you just had to do it for Dan. That sort of guy is someone who just inspires you to party until the sun comes up. Party guy to football guy, the way God intended you to live.
