Chuck Fletcher Takes The Offer Sheet Out Of Play, Signs Joel Farabee To A Cool 6-Year, $30M Extension

Getty Images.There's a slight chance that Tom Dundon, Don Waddell and the Carolina Hurricanes opened up a whole new shitstorm by signing Jesperi Kotkaniemi to an offer sheet this past weekend. At first the offer sheet was basically just an urban myth. Something in folklore you heard whispers of GMs doing before, but rarely ever saw one happen for yourself. But now the Carolina Hurricanes showed that it could be strategically used to simply fuck over a team that you have beef with. And who knows how the rest of the league will handle that in the future.
So Joel Farabee is set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the 2021-22 season. He was the Flyers' leading goal scorer last year (which isn't exactly saying much, but still) at just 20-years-old. The last thing the Flyers would want is for some dickhead GM to come around and float a $7-8M offer sheet to Farabee at the end of the season. You risk either losing one of your top young forwards, or you get screwed cap wise. Chuck Fletcher, being a big time hater of any variety of funny business, said fuck that and just gave Farabee his extension now.
And what a steal that's going to end up looking like in just a few short seasons.
Farabee's game is perfect for this team. He's got a ton of skill offensively, and with all those guys locked up for long term he'll have plenty of time to keep building that chemistry with Hayes and Konecny. But when he's not scoring, he plays the game with an edge. He's got that central New York grit to him. A good ol' boy from Cicero. He can be a pest, he can fly around out there, and he can put the puck in the back of the net. He's a huge piece for the future of the franchise, and having him locked up at $5M through the 2026-27 season is perfect.
And now hopefully that he's a certified rich guy, he can finally get in the lab and produce the Young Beezy Mixtape.
The Flyers desperately need a new goal song anyway. Do it, Joel.

P.S. - Calling it now but I think the addition of Cam Atkinson is going to be huge for Farabee's development. I think he's the perfect player to model his game after. Maybe a slightly more skilled Atkinson. We're talking 2018-19 Cam Atkinson.
