Fields To Get More Reps With Allen Robinson Against #1 Defense And I Think I Am Ready To Wipe The Slate Clean With Nagy
I've been highly critical of Nagy. The 54 passing plays, the handling of the quarterback beforehand, the whole "I'm not an idiot" speech, the whole circus about the kicking tryouts and making everyone kick it from 43 yards out. Didn't like any of that. The last two years have been tough to watch, but it was definitely tougher to coach. Sure....I probably said he should be fired multiple times last year. I felt that in my core. He didn't though and now...I don't know. I have this sense that there has been growth from him. He was a first time head coach when the Bears hired him. To assume that he'd be perfect and have no need for a learning curve would be ridiculous in hindsight. I feel like we have already seen growth from Nagy with how it relates to the QB situation this camp. He's saying the right things publicly about Dalton being QB1 while acknowledging how exciting and good Fields has been. That probably keeps everyone motivated. They seem to giving Fields more and more as time goes on and he keeps delivering and you can tell that Nagy can't hide his excitement. There's a little grin there every time he talks about him even if he is trying to temper expectations and balance out the hype with comments.
Three things have opened my perspective on Nagy.
1) some self-awareness to recognize that I am an idiot too and that I have needed time to adjust and grow with every job I have ever had(this one especially) and I should give others that same opportunity.
2) Jay Cutler clearly illustrated when talking to him that while some of the play calling seems illogical from the fan's perspective it might be that Nagy was calling the right play based on what the defense was giving him and that he didn't have the horses to execute the game plan. Now...coaches have to adjust to their talent and maybe Nagy should try to have a team DNA that imposes what they want to execute as opposed to reacting to the defense, but it was a worthwhile point by Cutler.
3) I met Joel Quenneville this weekend and he says that Nagy has the right stuff. Likes him as a coach. Q has a lot of pull with me so I am in.
Who knows when Fields gets in. Something tells me it might be during the Rams game, just not before. He's got the right stuff. Just needs time and maybe Nagy did too.
Unreal run of coaches lately on Redline Radio. We've had Tom Allen from IU, this coming week we have Mel Tucker and Bret Bielama. Then next week it's OUR coach. Joel Quenneville.
Still can't believe this happened
