Happy 20 Year Anniversary To Suge Knight Calling Out Puffy At The 1995 Source Awards

It’s wild to think that this beef happened 20 years ago and what everybody that was involved in it is doing now. Snoop has gone from someone calling out the East Coast in New York to a black version of Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Biggie is dead. Puffy has changed his name 100 times. Dr. Dre has basically become the most successful businessman in hip hop history and has a goddamn major movie coming out about NWA. And Suge Knight is on trial for murdering somebody. Well, actually that last one isn’t quite a surprise. But it is pretty ironic that the anniversary is today after all the talk about the way rap beefs used to be back in the day. This one had it all. Great diss tracks, people talking shit in public and actual deaths. Now we have bloggers writing diss records and whatever you want to call the Meek Mill/Drake beef. To quote Biggie, “Things done changed”.

I also hope they fired whoever allowed that alien Sam Cassell to be a presenter at The Theater at Madison Square Garden a little more than a year after he ripped the Knicks‘ hearts out in the Finals. Seeing that freak will always remind me of those big shots, the Pedro Cerrano big balls dance, and my favorite Jadakiss line ever (And y’all scared I can tell. That I’mma get Bucks like Milwaukee, cause like Sam, I ca’ sell). Luckily Kristaps Porzingis will rep New York on the court and in the studio and make all these bad memories disappear, right?

Anyway, just going back and watching that year’s Source Awards is ridiculous. Biggie winning Best New Artist. Outkast winning Best New Group. “Flava In Your Ear” absolutely ROBBING “Regulate” for Single of the Year.  Death Row having tons of bangers out despite no new album from Dre or Snoop.  Wu Tang just being Wu Tang.  And “Ready To Die” beating out “Illmatic”, “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” and “The Diary” in a mollywhopper of a race for Album of the Year.  Ed Lover and the other Dr. Dre trying to difuse any situations that could result in someone getting actually murdered on stage (by the way, having two Dr. Dres was ridiculous).  Just hip hop at it’s absolute zenith. You can watch the whole show on YouTube by clicking here.

I am still so mad I never saw Biggie in concert. The GOAT and it’s not even close.

And have you ever really made it as a rapper unless you have a guy in only boxers and Timberlands holding up your platinum album?  Hip hop is so weak these days.
