Tim Tebow STINKS

So Tim Tebow signed a deal to play tight end for the Jaguars this year. I'll just cut to the chase - it makes me SICK that this guy keeps getting shot after shot after shot to play professional sports. It's just disgusting; not only should he not be a professional athlete in any capacity, it's bringing the CK discussion back into light, which is a different discussion but sucks in and of itself.

Here were my knee jerk thoughts on it yesterday:

I obviously cannot stand the guy and think he REEKS of participation trophy culture, but what sticks out the most to me about this video is Chief, that bumbling idiot, calling him "an athlete". Let me be the first to say that Chief is WRONG!!!

If Chief were talking about Tebow being an "athlete" with respect to the general population, sure. Dude is like 6'3" and very well put together. But we're not talking about Tim Tebow with respect to the general population. If Chief was comparing Tebow to himself, then yes, he's a phenomenal athlete. But to compare him to other NFL tight ends? Or me? He is NO WHERE CLOSE to "athletic". He's an average athlete at best.

A quick google search of Tebow's combine results shows he ran a 4.71 40 yard dash:

In the 2021 combine alone, this would put him right in the meaty part of the curve. In the chart below, the column all the way to the right is the 40 times of all the participating tight ends at the past combine:

And only 5 (!!!) of these tight ends got drafted.

Now of course more goes into playing in the NFL than straight line speed. One of my favorite descriptors of any athlete in general is "twitchy". If an athlete is twitchy, you have a LOT to play with, even if they're raw as can be and need refining on their actual skillset as a player in whatever X sport they play. NFL scouts attempt to quantify this by measuring burst in 3 cone drills, verticals, and other ways.

Make no mistake about it - Tim Tebow is NOT twitchy. In fact, he's stiff as can be. That, and he's 33 FUCKING years old and will be 34 by the time the season starts. You think he's running that same 4.71 40 now? For sure not. You don't magically get faster at 33 years old and that is true even if you're a god fearing former Heisman winner with 2 national championships.

I just don't get the fascination infatuation with this guy. What I'm about to say goes against my outspoken annoyance of him, but I guarantee he's a great, great human. Big time philanthropist, kind, giving, etc… but I don't think that in and of itself is reason to just hand him a pro baseball contract that he didn't earn or sign him to a pro football contract to play a new position at 33 years old. If people just admitted that they're signing him as a side show to sell jerseys and profit off him, then fine… but nobody does. The Mets acted as if he had a legit shot at helping the big league club eventually, and unless the Jags cut him after a few days of camp, they'll be doing the same.

I mean, if he put up this slash line in MLB…

…it would have been one of the worst seasons in MLB history, but it was in the LAUNCHING PAD that is the AAA International League… and the Mets STILL wanted him back this year before he "retired". Just makes me sick. He's not the only person to work hard in the history of sports. He was a waste of a roster spot for the Mets and is now a waste of a roster spot for the Jaguars.

Tebow's arguably the best college QB ever. Nobody can deny that… but it was 10+ years ago. His skillset just doesn't translate to professional football in any way. I think that's inarguable as well and both statements can be true. Why does he keep getting shot… after shot… after shot… after shot? It makes NO sense to me.

Giphy Images.

SOMEONE MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!! And the dude hasn't won SHIT as a pro athlete. Don't tell me "he's a winner"… if he's a winner, he would have willed the Mets to a pennant and the Broncos/Pats/Jets/whoever else he played for to multiple Super Bowls. That's a lazy, lazy statement to make. Fuck outta my face with that and fuck outta my face with Tim Tebow.

PS - part of me hopes he gets an NBA or NHL deal next. Something tells me people would still accept that and say it'd be good for the team because he's a "winner" and I'd roast each and every one of them into Bolivian.
