Which is significant to this blog if you recognize DeLonge as more than just the guy your girlfriend was dreaming about while listening to "All the Small Things" the first time she let you get to third base. He's one of the founders of "To the Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences," perhaps the leading organization for research and information regarding Unidentified Flying Objects and Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. To the Stars is not just comprised of edgy, ironic pop-rock early 2000s California based musicians. But also consists of former CIA intelligence personnel and scientists, all interested in uncovering and publicizing the the truth about UFOs and UAP. They've even received some federal funding. Take all of this for what it's worth. Process it in whichever way you like. Believe it or don't. Healthy skepticism is not only a good thing, it's among the best of things. As Carl Sagan used to put it on this very phenomenon, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." As they should.
But just give believers like me this: If we were ever going to finally get to the truth of these sightings - which are not only not anything new, they've been chronicled throughout the entire human historical record in one form or another - isn't this exactly the way it would be revealed to us?
First of all, it would be the Department of Defense leading the way. They've got the budget, the equipment, the skilled personnel, the chain of command and the responsibility of tracking objects in the sky. After revealing nothing and even openly debunking such sightings for generations, they've slowly begun to admit there's something up there they can't explain. Now we're getting leaked information from briefings held to teach their own best and brightest how to report these encounters. Which is precisely what an organization would do if they wanted to slowly get the public used to the idea that their fundamental beliefs about their role in the universe is about to change forever.
You wouldn't just reveal it all in one massive document dump. No one would believe it. We're not psychologically wired to handle that much change all at once. It would be a shock to the human system. Like telling your 3-year-old the entire story of where babies come from, conception, birth, blink-182, and all. They've got to parcel this stuff out carefully, so that when the entire truth is revealed, we'll be able to process the full scope of what's been going on. Which is what they're doing.
In that respect, I'm glad it's the DoD on this job and not some other federal bureaucracy, who'd mess it up beyond recognition, like they do everything else. And we can take comfort that they're going to reveal all, sooner or later. Godspeed, men and women of the USS Russell and whoever else is on this job. The truth is (almost) out there.
