The Barstool Fund - Tiki's Playhouse

Up next: Tiki's Playhouse (Glenelg, MD)

Kevlin Abrams wanted a better life for dogs while their owners were away. He started Tiki's Playhouse with that mission and grew it into one of the area’s premier "doggie daycare", play center, pet sitting, cageless boarding, pet services and even a "K-9 and Coffee" coffee shop.

This story was written by one of "Tiki's Playhouse" customers and was submitted for this section…."Glenelg is a small community and Kelvin Abrams is an amazing small business owner, community contributor, and hard working person trying to help others while keeping his businesses afloat. For Kelvin, his business is personal. Kelvin started Tiki's Playhouse after he came home one day from work and found his 11 month old Weimaraner had accidentally choked himself. At that time Kelvin decided to leave his successful government career and found Tiki's Playhouse, with a different and unique pet care experience. As his dog Tiki spent much of his short life in a crate while Kelvin was at work, Kelvin wanted a better life for dogs while their owners were away. He started Tiki's Playhouse with that mission in mind and grew it into one of our County's premier "doggie daycare", play center, pet sitting, cageless boarding, pet services and even a "K-9 and Coffee" coffee shop. Kelvin hires only those employees who love dogs and as a customer, not only do I trust Tiki's Playhouse with my dogs, our dogs are extremely excited to go to Tiki's Playhouse and always come home tired! When COVID hit, many people stopped bringing their dogs to Tiki's. Kelvin's investment in his coffee shop also took a hit. With lack of revenue, Kelvin needed to take out PPP loans, borrow from his retirement plan, and make other difficult choices to pay for the fixed expenses that were not going away. As of today, it looks like there is no path to keeping his business running past the next few months. When we all start heading back to work, there will not be a Tiki's Playhouse for our dogs, and yet another small business owner will disappear from Community."
