Mr. Henry's has been operating continually since 1966 in its current location on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. My family has owned this business since 1971. It has always been a place where everyone is welcome and employed - white, black, Hispanic, gay, straight, hearing, deaf, conservative or liberal. We are a neighborhood staple and a collaborator with other neighborhood businesses. This spring, DC Mayor Bowser did not allow retail stores to even do curbside pick-up, though restaurants could offer curbside pick-up. So, we partnered with the local bookstore, game store and kitchen wares store so those stores could continue to sell to their local customers without shipping charges. Please see the story featured here in our local news, https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/business/capitol-hill-small-businesses-unite-at-1-location-to-weather-pandemic/2293342/. Folks love our burgers, our homemade soups and sandwiches. We have live jazz upstairs four or five nights a week. This is where Roberta Flack was discovered, and her first album cover photo was taken upstairs at Mr. Henry's! We did get the PPP and we were able to hire back everyone that wanted to come back. We even replaced those that had moved away or chose not to return to work. But the cold weather has reduced the outside patrons, and though we have a number of regulars willing to sit inside, it isn't enough. Then our indoor dining room was closed for four weeks from Dec 24 through Jan 22 by mayor's order! This winter is tough, we've gone through the PPP, through a few city grants and through savings. Now, we are really struggling to hang on until warmer weather when our outside patio can be full again!
