The San Diego Padres continue to have the offseason of a lifetime, trading for two frontline starting pitchers, signing major league proven talent and now locking up their franchise player, Fernando Tatis Jr., to a 14-year, $340 million extension.

On one hand, you can look at this and think, holy shit, this dude has played less than a full major league season in his entire big league career and the Padres just signed him for 14 fucking years and gave him the third largest contract in the history of the game. Or, you can look at this as the Padres identifying that they have one of the game’s best players on their roster who’s 22 years old, loves San Diego and is willing to forgo free agency for the bag right the fuck now.

It’s a no-brainer. And I understand that it’s wild to call a contract that will pay out $340 million to a player a “steal”, but I mean…that’s an AAV of $24.3 million. He’ll be getting paid out through his age-35 season. For the price of $340 million, the Padres legitimately got themselves a bargain for Tatis and I don’t think I’m crazy for saying that.

I would say the biggest takeaways here for me are A.) fire your agent yesterday, Ronald Acuña Jr. and B.) Juan Soto is about to get half a billion dollars.

Extremely happy for Padres fans, though. It’s great when you have a “small market team” spend like a big market team when they’ve identified a player worth spending on. Tatis was the guy, and he got his money. He’ll be a Padre until Dave Portnoy is 57 years old.
