Gina Carano Jedi Mind Tricks Herself Out Of A Lucrative STAR WARS Bag
"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."
Carano has also been dropped as a client by UTA, an agency spokesperson confirms.
First off, Carano wasn't fired just because of her social media post yesterday comparing people with voluntary political beliefs to people who were systematically killed via industrialized murder because of their religion. This started well before yesterday. She had already been on the Mouse's radar because of prior posts and when Disney didn't announce her new show during a December rollout, that apparently should have been a cue to mind her Ps & Qs. It wasn't taken.
“They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw,” a source with knowledge of Lucasfilm’s thinking tells THR.
Imagine working in the entertainment industry and thinking it was a good idea to clumsily invoke the Holocaust in an attempt to make some sort of point on an Instagram post? While already on double-secret probation? With potential riches ahead?
People who think this is a free speech or First Amendment issue need to take a civics class. This is a contracted employee working for a company under their rules and guidelines. This has nothing to do with the government shutting anybody's voice down or censoring anybody. You don't just get to say whatever you want whenever you want "cuz freedom!" and expect no consequences or repercussions should you upset your bosses or the masses (again and again).
I work for Barstool fucking Sports and would never think of Tweeting that shit. So imagine working on a kid-friendly show for a global media conglomerate that purports to love its squeaky clean family image and still thinking you can put that out there and not face any blowback from the many, many people above you?
Gina Carano wasn't canceled. She dared her bosses to do something and they called her bluff. She could've simply not shitposted, got out-acted for three or four seasons of "Cara Dune", parlayed that into more work, and lived off residuals if she wanted to. But she didn't. Carano just couldn't help herself. And Disney just decided that the milk wasn't worth the squeeze anymore.
Can't wait for Season 3…
