It's Time We Admit the Lombardi Is a Trash Trophy

As I watched this video 100 times over with the rest of social media, I found myself thinking nothing of the act of Tom Brady tossing the Lombardi Trophy from boat to boat, but rather how remarkably trash the trophy is. It stinks. More people need to be talking about this.

For being the ultimate prize of the most-watched sport in America, the Lombardi Trophy is tremendously underwhelming. Just look at the thing. Does that award look worthy of a game watched by 100 million people?

Obviously the Stanley Cup is the bar for trophies in professional sports, but the Commissioner's Trophy in baseball is fantastic, as well. When you see players hoisting either of those bad boys after winning a title, it feels deserving of the moment. And the O'Brien Trophy follows much of the same model as the Lombardi, but it at least has a little bit of a unique shape and feel to it.

The Lombardi Trophy? A silver football atop a slightly concave pyramid.

And I'm not against simplistic designs when it comes to this sort of thing. The crystal football trophy that was unceremoniously usurped by the College Football Playoff was right up there as one of the best trophies in sports. Hell, the NFL should just take that and make it the new Lombardi.

My only point is the Lombardi Trophy, in its current form, is an award undeserving of the work it takes to attain it. Everybody has been brainwashed by tradition and marketing to believe this is a good trophy when it is, in fact, trash. It's time we do a little bit of work to make this trophy worthy of being a Super Bowl champion.
