In 1999, people laughed when I quit my job to help my husband start our barbecue restaurant, but when they heard we hired people with developmental challenges, they soon cheered us on.
During the "Great Recession," when many black-owned businesses didn't survive, we expanded from carry-out only to offering dine-in services. We celebrated by donating Thanksgiving turkeys to local non-profit organizations and families in need.
Our focus has been on creating a better customer experience.
As entrepreneurs of color, as a veteran and women-owned business, we find ways to exceed expectations of preconceived notions.
The Travel Channel recognized our focus on quality-over-quickness. The entire community received national recognition because of our St. Louis-style pork steaks.
When we started, they said we could not make it without a business plan. But after twenty years, we realize what we needed most is to focus on two words -- "Just Serve."
