Why Undefeated Drake Basketball Can Make a Deep Run in March

We are less than eight weeks away from Selection Sunday. As of right now, there are just four teams in the country who are still undefeated (minimum 10 games played). You've definitely seen the headlines about Gonzaga. You've glanced past the tweets about Baylor, too. Winthrop is having an awesome season as well. But let's introduce you to the 13-0 Drake Bulldogs.

This undefeated squad out of the Missouri Valley Conference has made a statement game in and game out. Their closest win is by 10 points, and that was in Drake's season opener against a Big 12 team in Kansas State. Also, my co-hosts, Rico and Marty, would be quick to tell you that not only are the Bulldogs undefeated by record, but they have covered the spread in every single game so far this season. A (responsible) gambler's dream.

On today's episode of the Barstool Bench Mob, we welcomed on Drake's Head Coach, Darian DeVries. The Northern Iowa alum talked to us about how he manages to deal with the extended press coverage that comes with being undefeated, being an assistant at Creighton for 18 years, and much more.

As of right now, the 13-0 Bulldogs sit at No. 57 in KenPom's rankings. One of their best players is named Tank Hemphill. But the depth of this team is what makes Drake the real deal. No player is averaging more than 25 minutes per game, which will benefit them come conference and maybe NCAA tournament time when they're playing a bunch of games in a quick turnaround.

Nobody knows how the NCAA Selection Committee will compare Mid-Majors to Power Six schools come March. But if the Drake Bulldogs win the MVC and go dancing, consider them a dangerous threat to win a game or two in the Big Dance. Their conference does have some recent history of tournament success, after all:
