Golden State Might Have To Pay Steph Curry Over $50 Million Per Year To Keep Him A Warrior For Life

For those who may not be aware, Steph has two guaranteed seasons left on his current 5/201M deal that will pay him $43M this season and $45M next season which will bring him through his age 33 season. Naturally, this is the time where players usually start talking about extensions. So the question now becomes, what will the Warriors do? You may think it's a no brainer decision, but the extension numbers are rather outrageous, even if it was a 3-year extension

I mean holy shit. A 3/156M extension for a player starting in his age 34 season seems like a death wish. But this is Steph Curry we're talking about. Remember him?

He did just save a bunch of miles on his legs being hurt all last season, and it's not like he's a smaller guard who relies on his quickness to be effective. The man will still be the best shooter alive at age 35 and 36 if you ask me. The problem is, even if the cap increases slightly over these next few seasons, can you really build a contender when almost half of your cap goes to one player? Remember, Draymond is about to start Year 1 of his 4/99M extension this season, and he has a $27M player option in 2023 when he's 33 years old. I think we can all assume he's picking that up. Klay is in Year 2 of his 5/189M extension and both of those are now "wasted". So, you're telling me that in that 2022-23 season the Warriors will be paying Draymond $25M, Klay $40M and Steph $48M. Those numbers only increase in the following years. That seems like a ton of money to be paying a 32 year old, 32 year old, and 34 year old. Especially now that there have to be injury concerns moving forward.

In the end though, the Warriors hands are kind of tied. You don't let Steph Curry hit the open market, I don't care how old he is. I can understand wanting to keep this core together after the injuries they've had these past two seasons. I certainly don't care about rich ass owners having to pay the luxury tax and all that bullshit. It's not my money. Now, there's always the chance that Steph works with the team and takes a team-friendly discount to stay a Warrior for life…..but why would he? To save his owners money? They are going to be capped out regardless.

What I do wonder is if we see the team be proactive and try and move players like Draymond or Wiggins in the near future to try and help with their cap sheet, but isn't the whole point of giving out all these extensions to keep their core together?

While I think it would be fun as hell to see all the chaos that would ensue if Curry ever actually hit the market, my gut tells me the Warriors will pay that man his money. My question is, would you?
