Lincoln Riley Dropped a Bombshell in His Press Conference Today That OU Has Bob Stoops Serving as a Temporary Assistant Coach

After being mentioned for seemingly every college football head coaching vacancy since his retirement in 2016, Bob Stoops has finally accepted another job in college football. Except it's as a temporary assistant coach back at Oklahoma.

OU has several coaches out due to COVID, so Lincoln Riley called up his old boss and he apparently agreed to help out for as long as needed. Stoops will presumably be on the sideline this Saturday when Oklahoma takes on Baylor.

I love how RIley just casually slipped in there that one of the two best head coaches in school history was back as a secret assistant. You can see his wry smile, too. He knew exactly what he was doing when he said that.

COVID has forced some interesting situations this football season, but this is at least a somewhat cool one. Stoops could have had his pick of jobs over the last few years — he did coach the XFL's Dallas Renegades for their brief run — but to see him back at Oklahoma, even if it's just for a week, is pretty awesome.

So now everybody can add "former head coach with a statue already outside the stadium returns as a volunteer assistant" to their 2020 COVID football season bingo card.

It's nice to see that Stoops had some time to divert from promoting tequila to make a brief return to college football. Hopefully we'll get to see him out there on Saturday.
