Which Fictional Band Would You Rather See Live - The Wonders From "That Thing You Do" Or Drive Shaft From "Lost"

vs.

After waking up with That Thing You Do this morning, it got me to thinking about my other favorite fictional band of all time, Drive Shaft from the TV show Lost. Both are great bands with great songs, but I can’t decide which band I would rather be real. I mean obviously both, get the nice 60’s jams of the Wonders followed by the bad boys of Drive Shaft, it’s hard to beat that 1-2 punch. But in fairness to the blog, you can only pick 1. Which all time great band that never was would you rather see live? Here’s my quick breakdown of both bands:

The Wonders - Phenomenally talented band, led by lead singer Jimmy Mattingly and drummer Guy Patterson. Rocketed up the charts with their smash hit “That Thing You Do!”. Broke up because Tom Hanks wanted them to play pop songs specifically for radio play, while Jimmy wanted to write his own songs and didn’t want to sell out. So while they had the number 1 song in the country, the band split, just like that. Jimmy formed his new band The Heardsmen and continued to make hit songs. While they were 1-hit wonders, That Thing You Do! is an all time classic song. Plus when you see them live, you get to see Jimmy, who became a pretty big rock star in his own right. So some would say he’s worth the price of admission alone.

Drive Shaft - Their smash hit “You All Everybody” is straight fire, no other way to put it. Drive Shaft was a band out of Manchester, England who were rock n roll stars, until in-fighting and drugs got the better of them. If Charlie and Liam didn’t get into drugs, who knows what could have been. The potential was sky high. Just because the brothers were arguing doesn’t mean they couldn’t have made it work. You All Everybody lives on as Drive Shafts only hit song, but if they got back together, magic would be made. Now, for the sake of the question, let’s just assume if you pick Drive Shaft, Charlie is involved, since…you know…

Both bands felt the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. The Wonders toured the country, filmed a movie, appeared on television shows, and lived the dream. But they also lost “The Bass Player” to the marines, had to deal with Jimmy being a dick 24×7, and really only had 1 song. Drive Shaft also pretty much only had 1 hit song, but at least they made 2 CDs. Either band getting back together would shock the world and sell out arenas nation-wide, but which would you rather see? Mr. Steal Your Girl Guy Patterson rocking out on the drums once again, or Charlie and Liam back together, drug free, killing it with their best Oasis impressions?
