Three Brothers Finally Win $500,000 After Playing the Same Lottery Numbers for 40 Years

After unbelievably playing the exact same lottery numbers for 40 years, three brothers in Australia finally hit for $500,000.

The brothers said they used the same numbers weekly over the course of the last four decades. If you assume a total of $10 twice a week for the last 2,080 weeks, the brothers spent a little more than $40,000 on tickets for a $500,000 payout. Not a bad return on investment.

This is one of the ultimate stories that when you hear about it makes you wonder why the hell you don't do this. If you have $10 a week to spare forever, it stands to reason that at some point over the course of your life, whatever number combination you pick will come up eventually. You just have to be willing to lose $40,000 before you potentially win anything.

I love it. Just pick random numbers and keep putting them down until they hit, no matter how long it takes. This is like how I tell myself before every MLB season that I'm just going to bet every single -200 favorite for the entire year and know I'll come out ahead at the end of the year — except I never do.

The thing I don't know is whether $500,000 feels better or worse having spent $40,000 on tickets as opposed to getting lucky on one ticket. I think the feeling would be more relief than euphoria knowing that all that money wasn't spent in vain.
