Bears Hire Former CFL Coach Of The Year Marc Trestman

Hmmm, wonder what Phil saw in Trestman? Nerd City.

CHICAGO — The Chicago Bears ended their search for a new coach early Wednesday morning when they made the decision to bring aboard the Montreal Alouettes’ Marc Trestman as the franchise’s 14th head coach. A noted quarterback guru, Trestman has been out of the NFL for eight years before his stint in the CFL that eventually led to his succeeding Lovie Smith, who was fired by the Bears on Dec. 31. The Bears scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. ET on Thursday. The Chicago Tribune reported the news Tuesday night.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter weighs in on the Bears’ hiring of Marc Trestman and the latest news regarding the coaching vacancies in Philadelphia and Jacksonville. Trestman, 57, recently signed an extension with the Alouettes that takes his deal through 2016, but it’s likely he’ll be allowed out of his CFL contract to join the Bears, according to a source. Trestman is coming off an 11-7 season in the CFL. In five seasons with the Alouettes, Trestman led the team to three appearances in the Grey Cup, including consecutive championships in 2009 and 2010 in addition to being been named CFL coach of the year (2009). Trestman interviewed for the second time for the job on Monday at the end of a process that included 12 other known candidates. Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was among the finalists, along with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.

Well Left Field it is I guess. Chicago Bears, home of the Grey Cup!

In all seriousness though I think this was the right hire. The one thing we needed in a new Head Coach was a forward thinking Offensive mind and that seems to be Marc Trestman in a nutshell. Like I said last week, he made Rich Gannon an NFL MVP so you know the guy understands football, the offensive nuances of football, and most importantly the quarterback position. And yes its a little off putting that he has been out of the NFL for 8 years but you know what, part of me also likes that. From all accounts Marc Trestman went to the CFL because he was tired of the bureaucratic bullshit and dick sucking it takes to get hired as an NFL Head Coach. He thought he was ready to Head Coach and the league didn’t, so instead of continually being an OC he went and dominated the CFL and cut his teeth on running a team there. I like a guy like that. Anti-Establishment. That’s the Barstool way.

So yes, this hiring is a little weird and slightly shocking but that’s what I was looking for. The Bears have been a conservative, defense first franchise for essentially their entire existence. Sure we could have hired Bruce Arians or the next OC du juor, but Phil Emery wanted to swing for the fences, he wanted the smartest guy in the room and from all accounts he got him.  And I know the Sports world has a very short term memory but wasn’t it just a few years ago that the Packers hired a little known Mike McCarthy. That was a shocking hire at the time and look where they ended up. So lets do this Marc, lets play some Canadian Tackle Football, lets get fucking weird.

PS
I figured out the whole Jimmy Johnson thing. If you live in Chicago you would know that the media has basically been running a non-stop PR Campaign for Trestman. Every radio show has been a carousel of people from Trestman’s past saying how fantastic he is. I’m not saying the Bears orchestrated it to get the fan base comfortable with such an unknown hire but that’s totally what happened. So clearly Jimmy Johnson got the memo, “Talk positively about Marc Trestman”, and in his utter stupidity just took that as Marc Trestman is hired. Its like the old saying don’t send a boy to do a man’s job, well don’t send Jimmy Johnson to do a job that takes more than 2 brain cells to comprehend.
