In a surprising transaction, the Jacksonville Jaguars released RB Leonard Fournette Monday, just three seasons removed from selecting him fourth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Fournette had two productive years when he was healthy for the entire season, but it's safe to say his time in Jacksonville will likely be remembered more for such an unceremonious exit. And if you're a Jaguars fan, I sincerely hope you did not find your way to this list of all the running backs drafted after Fournette in 2017. My goodness, what a catastrophic draft pick the Jags made.
In addition to selecting Fournette over Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, Dalvin Cook and a host of others, Jacksonville also passed on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson in favor of a running back. But even if you were intent on selecting a running back, my goodness, what a list the Jags passed up.
Nobody really knows what Jacksonville is doing releasing Fournette because his performance has been adequate, but just let this serve as a lesson to never draft a running back in the first round. There will always be Pro Bowl-caliber running backs on the board in the fourth round.
Many seem to think Jacksonville is tanking for Trevor Lawrence. But if past decisions are any indicator, it might just be tanking for Travis Etienne.
