Sunday Night Sample - The Pharcyde - Runnin'

Original - The Pharcyde - Runnin'

This song is timeless.

As is pretty much everything produced by the one and only J Dilla.

"Runnin" was the first single from The Pharcyde's second album, Labcabincalifornia, released in 1995. "Runnin" hit as high as #35 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also went on to be featured in the movie 8 Mile, as well as the movie's monster soundtrack.

The song was both loved and hated for its upbeat and fun instrumental and catchy hook. Even though the theme of the song was about the negative effects of bullying.

The beauty of the track is the genius sample work J Dilla did on the production side.

For starters, he took Stan Getz' "Saudade Vem Correndo"

and flipped the horn arrangement along with the guitar and piano. A major statement maker.

He also took the horns from Woody Herman's "Flying Easy"

as well as the brush drums from James Moody's "You Follow Me"

Run DMC's - Rock Box is also sampled vocally. The "Run" sample plays in part of the song's hook.

“If Labcabincalifornia came out today, boasting production by J Dilla on seven out of 17 tracks would be a big deal…” - Complex Magazine
