Jimi Hendrix' "Are You Experienced?" debuted on this date 53 years ago.
And it rocked the music industry (no pun intended) to the extent that it's reverberations are still being felt 50+ years later.
It was a mash-up of heavy rock n roll, jazz, psychedelic funk, r&b, and the blues in a way that nobody had ever done before. On top of all that you had Hendrix' iconic and totally unique guitar playing ability.
Tracks such as "Fire", "Foxy Lady", "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe", and "Manic Depression" made this album in hindsight more of a greatest hits release than a debut. It's pretty fuckin incredible.
Hendrix was quoted as saying about the record, “What it was saying was, ‘Let us through the wall, man, we want you to dig it.'”
Are You Experienced spent 106 weeks on the Billboard chart and sold more than 5 million copies in the U.S. alone.
