Listen to Trent Dilfer on Why We Need Football

In an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, former NFL quarterback and current Lipscomb Academy (Nashville, Tenn.) head coach Trent Dilfer gave a great speech on why high school and collegiate student-athletes need football this fall.

"Really, the greatest part about football ... is the goodness of football," Dilfer said. "(Players) learn lessons that they wouldn't learn in other arenas. They learn lessons they don't learn in the classroom. They learn figure it out-ness. They learn critical thinking. They learn grit ... Learning to love and be a part of something bigger than yourself. Learning to integrate with people who grew up different than you, what a novel thought."

"I really think our world needs a dose of a week of football," Dilfer said.

I tell you what, for a guy who once proclaimed on national television, "You can't lose games in the NFL and still win," Trent Dilfer seems like a high school coach I'd run through a brick wall for. There are a lot of coaches out there who tout the benefits of football without necessarily meaning it or practicing what they preach, but you can just hear in his voice that Dilfer is a true Football Guy.

This country needs football. Don't do it for me, do it for the kids.
