Mike Singletary Is The Exact Opposite Of What I Want In The Next Bears Head Coach

(Source) The Bears plan to interview Minnesota Vikings assistants Mike Singletary and Mike Priefer for Chicago’s head-coaching opening, according to multiple reports. In addition to being a Bears legend at linebacker, Singletary has previous head-coaching experience, having led the San Francisco 49ers to an 18-22 mark over three seasons. The current Vikings linebackers coach was succeeded in San Francisco by Jim Harbaugh, another former Bear. Priefer, the Vikings’ special teams coach, has helped rookie sixth-round place kicker Blair Walsh reach the Pro Bowl this season.

Chicago, which is looking to replace the recently fired Lovie Smith, was scheduled to interview Marc Trestman, coach of the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, on Monday. Trestman already has ties to Bears quarterbacksJay Cutler and Jason Campbell, as he worked with both ahead of their respective drafts. The Bears have also been given permission to interview Houston Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Sunday. Chicago also received permission to speak to Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, sources confirmed to ESPN on Sunday.

Look I love Samurai Mike. Bear legend. Old School player. Old School Coach. Cut directly out of the Ditka cloth. But he can not be the next head coach of the Bears. Just can not happen. Can not win with him. Can not Coach with him. Can’t do it. Won’t do it.

And don’t get me wrong, I love what Phil Emery is doing. He’s literally interviewing anyone who has ever had a thought about football. Special team coaches, CFL coaches, College coaches, everyone. If you played in High School, Phil wants to speak with you. If you play Madden when you’re high, Phil wants to talk with you. If you toss the ball around once a year on Thanksgiving day, Phil would like to see you in his office. And that’s exactly what a coaching search should be. Basically overturning every single rock out there. But at the end of the day the one thing I want in a coach is a cerebral offensive thinker. I need the next level guy. I need the guy who is thinking one step ahead. How to win in a league that is more like flag football than tackle. And I think we can all agree Mike Singletary is not that guy.

PS
I hope this wasn’t just our one “minority” candidate interview (honestly can’t keep track of who has come in at this point) because that would be a slap in the face to a Bear Legend. I don’t want Singletary to be the next Bears Head Coach but I also don’t want to waste his time.
