Mikey Williams, No.1 Hoops Recruit In The Country, Says He Would Never Let Coach K Buy Him A Car And Hints At Making History By Committing To An HBCU

Well this just took another interesting turn. Over the course of the last month or so Mikey Williams, the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2023, has been very open about playing for an HBCU. It would obviously be the biggest story in recruiting considering an HBCU has never been in consideration for a top recruit before. Last month he tweeted from an old account that 'going to an HBCU wouldn't be that bad.' He instantly received offers from nearly every HBCU in the country. He expanded on it a bit via 247

"I've always looked into going to an HBCU; my mom went to Hampton, and she put it in my head early, with my social media following and influence I feel that I have a chance to change sports forever," Williams wrote. "A lot of athletes are so star struck by big-name schools and coaches that they forget they control their own narrative.

“Any way I can help or make a change in the black community best believe I am going to do that,” Williams wrote. “Only God knows what the future holds. But when that time does come that I have to narrow my schools down to whatever number it is...there WILL be multiple HBCU’s on that list! And they won’t just be there for show.”

So apparently people are confused about what an HBCU is. An HBCU is a historically black colleges and universities. Most of the schools in the MEAC/SWAC are HBCU's. Hampton or Tennessee State are probably the two biggest/best HBCU hoops schools, but you'll know others like Norfolk State, NC Central, Howard or Texas Southern.

Here's the thing - we're starting to see guys go different routes. Whether it's overseas, the G League or you look at Anthony Edwards to Georgia, guys like Fultz/Stewart/McDaniels to Washington, Cade Cunningham to Oklahoma State, Evan Mobley to USC, etc, guys aren't just always going to the typical blue blood programs. This is something that could happen with Mikey Williams and going to one of the HBCU's.

That's especially true since he says he wouldn't let Coach K buy him a car. Makes me wonder if Coach K offered to buy him a car. I bet he did. Well not him per se, but he 100% had his bag guy drop off a car to recruits before. No doubt it in my mind about that.

Oh and as for Mikey Williams? Yeah, he's really fucking good
