Yankee Week 1 Recap
Well that is not how we wanted the week to start but at least we closed it out with a big win and what is hopefully signs of our bats finally showing up. When you look at a 2-4 team it’s hard to be optimistic but if you look at both of these series losses, it’s not that far off to say this team can compete.
When you look at the Toronto series, Opening Day was decided by a 5 run inning which is going to happen from time to time regardless of who your ace is. Would we have preferred Tanaka pitched better? Of course, but all things considered for a guy with an injured elbow, it wasn’t a terrible start. The same thing happened on Thursday with CC giving up 4 runs in the 2nd inning. Without that inning, the Yankees win and win that series on the back of ARod’s first home run of the year.
For the Boston series, the opening game was just a matter of not being able to finish our business. This team didn’t quit and was able to push the game to extras with a 2 out 9th inning home run and then come back twice in extras. When you get into a game that goes that long, it can go either way but showing that fight gives me hope. The Saturday game, lets just say it rhymes with shmashmortion, but without a Garrett Jones dropped ball, that game is a lot closer and the Yankees have a shot to win.
That brings us to last night’s game, which we hope is the beginning of the bats waking up from their winter slumber. Hanging 14 runs on a division rival in a game started by their ace is what a team like this needs to kick start a run into a long road trip. This team isn’t going to score 14 every night but there is no reason this team can’t score 5 runs a game and with our rotation and some better defense, that’s a winning combination.
All this team needs to do is stop making so many errors that are costing us games, and keep the offensive momentum going from last night. If we can do that, we won’t be playing from behind as much and with baseball being a game that can rely on momentum, this can be the beginning of something good. Oh yeah, we also need ARod to keep doing his thing.
Did I convince you things aren’t that bad? I think I convinced myself.
