LAKE ZURICH, Ill., April 7 (UPI) — Duke’s win over Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament Championship Game propelled an Illinois sixth grader into the top spot of ESPN’s Bracket Challenge.

The 68-63 finish Monday night propelled the bracket filled out by Sam Holtz, 12, of Lake Zurich, into the top spot of the ESPN contest, beating out 11.57 million other submitted brackets.

“Just rushed right through it. I think it was all skill, some people say it was luck, but I think I studied enough,” Holtz told WLS-TV.

The contest’s website says the entry with the most points will be eligible for a $20,000 Best Buy gift card and a trip to the 2015 Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

However, the contest’s rules state participants must be at least 18 years old, and Holtz falls 6 years short of the marker.

Holtz said his father helped him enter the contest and allowed him to use his email address. It was unclear Tuesday whether Holtz would be eligible to claim a prize through his father.

Well before the tournament I told you that your mother and Karen from HR who just got back from maternity leave would both have a better bracket than you. Then we found out the last perfect bracket belonged to a 26 year old sign language interpreter from Cleveland named Malachi who never watched a college hoops game in his life. And of course, when it’s all said and done, the best bracket in the country was some punk ass 12 year old who’s not even technically old enough to be playing. That’s just how March Madness works. Everyone thinks they’re an expert until the first round ends and your shit is busted and at the bottom of the office trash can while a 12 year old kid going through puberty gives nails the whole thing. It’s a total crapshoot and makes you realize you don’t know nearly as much about sports as you think, Mitt Romney and Kmarko being the obvious exceptions.

PS – ESPN needs to get their shit together and give this kid his prize. $20K to Best Buy is pretty much the most amazing gift a 12 year old can possibly get.
