Maryland Officially Joined the Big 10 Today

So after 1000 years in the ACC, Maryland officially joined the B1G today. What does it mean? Well, I don’t think it means as much as some other people. College athletics have changed. It’s all about making as much money as humanly possible. There’s still tradition, but not as much as there used to be. Schools are jumping conferences every other day. I still don’t think anyone fully understands the whole Big East/New Big East thing.

What it does mean for Maryland though is a bunch more money. That sweet, sweet B1G Network money for starters. Playing against teams like Ohio State and Penn State in football brings in more money then playing against Duke and Boston College. Rationally, moving to the Big 10 is great for Maryland.

And even furthermore, Maryland’s football recruiting is already really good. Not blowing smoke, Mike Locksley and Randy Edsall have done a fuck of a hell of a job bringing in recruits that have no business coming to a “basketball school”. It’s really impressive what they’ve done. And while on the subject, it’s absolutely depressing the direction the basketball program has gone. For the first time in forever, I’m more optimistic about the football team than the basketball team. Joining the B1G will be tough, but it’s for the best. I’m all aboard the move.

PS: Now almost every Barstool writer is in the B1G. Iowa, Maryland, Wisconsin, Michigan, Rutgers (Mo, RIP).

PS: They brought all the mascots to DC to sweat their balls off today. And a couple hot cheerleaders to remind them that they are, in fact, mascots.

PS: Even weirder than Maryland joining is Rutgers. Rutgers is in the Big 10. What a deal for one of the worst athletic programs in the country.
