Well That Didn't Go How I Wanted
Hey guys, I got a quick question. How do you beat a team that shoots 110% from behind the arc? I’ll answer my own question actually. You can’t. It’s impossible. Seriously. Did Gonzaga miss a three during that game? Are they still shooting them and making them? I feel like they are. They made it RAIN on the Hawks tonight. It started out that way and it never seemed to stop. Ran Iowa right outta the gym After the first few minutes it was seemingly impossible for the Hawks to get Gonzaga’s lead under 10. Iowa would make a little push and the Zags would come right back and hit a three or feed one of their beasts inside (which Iowa had zero match for) and they’d be back up by 15 just like that. Iowa made their mistakes to be sure. Their defense was horrible in the first half. They kept hedging up top and letting Gonzaga’s bigs to have free reign in the paint. Their shooting wasn’t great. But every mistake the Hawks made was magnified by the Bulldogs incredible shooting performance. It was as simple as that. Hard to beat a team that shoots lights out like that.
Great season. Fun season. Frustrating at times (home loss to Minnesota, loss to Northwestern). Super fun at times (Win on the road at UNC, 31-point tournament win against Davidson). I wish we could’ve gone further in the tournament but it was a successful year.
PS- Worst part of that game? It was Aaron White’s final game as a Hawkeye. Hard to believe it’s already been 4 years but it’s been a great 4 years. That dude has meant more to to Iowa than any player in recent memory. Him and Fran. When they arrived on the scene in Iowa City the basketball program was broken thanks to Todd Lickliter. It couldn’t have been moving in a worse direction. They came in an flipped everything around. In Lickliter’s last season the Hawks won a total of 10 games. Now? Iowa has won 20+ games the last three seasons with two NCAA tournament appearances and a tournament win. That’s an incredible turnaround and enough can’t be said about the impact Aaron White had on all of it. One the greatest players to ever put on a Hawkeye jersey. No doubt about it.
