David Backes Is "Likely Moving Back To The Western Conference" Before Monday's Trade Deadline Per A Report
Oh sweet Jesus if Don Sweeney pulls this off.. I've said it once and I'll say it again, David Backes, the person, is a tremendous human being. He was a great leader for the Bruins and helped so many of the younger players develop in that locker room. His contract and his performance, not great. He has another year left (after this year) on his 5 year, $30 million dollar deal ($6 million cap hit). He was waived in late January, did not need to report to Providence, and hasn't played since. Don Sweeney has been working the phones to add to this team and IF (not a done deal) he can unload Backes' contract, watch out.
The Leafs had to package a 1st round pick to Carolina for them to take on Patrick Marleau. I'm guessing Sweeney wants to keep his 1st for say a Palmieri or Kreider. So it's going to be very interesting to see if/where Backes would end up and what for. Western Conference just makes me think San Jose for some reason. Minnesota maybe? It's a guessing game right now. Will have more info as it comes in.
