Drew Bledsoe Says Playing QB For The Jets Is Like Being A Sacrificial Virgin
NYDN – Drew Bledsoe hasn’t played for the Jets’ greatest rival since 2001, but that didn’t stop him from taking a shot at Gang Green on Monday when asked about Mark Sanchez now starting in Philly. “Going to play quarterback for the Jets … it’s kind of like, you know when they used to take the pretty young virgin up to the edge of the volcano and then just throw them in?” Bledsoe said on ESPN Radio. “That’s kind of what it is when you play quarterback for the Jets. It just feels bad. “Mark had to live with that for a long time,” Bledsoe added. “And people threw him under the bus like he was the whole reason for the demise of the Jets. “To see him be able to come on to the field in a good system, with good talent and perform well, I’m just really happy for him.”
Listen he’s not wrong. I’m not even going to try to defend this franchise when it comes to the quarterback situation. Of course, not everybody can fall ass backwards into a quarterback legend the way the Pats did. Not every franchise can have the moon and the stars and all the fucking planets align the way they did for the Colts with Peyton into Luck. Not every team scoops up an MVP expected to be the #1 pick at #24 the way the Packers did with their transition from Favre to Rodgers. There’s always some element of luck or serendipity to land that franchise QB.
But the Jets are SO far from those examples I just gave, its apples and oranges. We’re not even in the same universe as those teams and those QBs. And the proof is in the pudding. This team has historically trotted out complete garbage under center, and in recent years they ruined quarterbacks. There’s no denying that guys have regressed under the most recent Jets regimes. Its a little melodramatic to liken it to getting thrown into a volcano, but get back to me on Sunday and I’m sure I’ll be 100% on board with Bledsoe’s comparison.
So, no major beef with Bledsoe on his comments. But I will say this – there needs to be some level of personal accountability. Like the fact that Sanchez is now some sympathetic figure and all of his failure is now squarely on the Jets shoulders is bullshit. The fact that it was all the system and all the lack of talent around him and blah blah blah. People are forgetting how bad Sanchez was with this team. He was absolutely just as bad as Geno has been. He threw some of the worst picks of all time. He put his head up his teammates butthole. Like I said for many years, and like I just admitted again in this blog, Jets management and ownership made it as hard as possible for Sanchez to flourish and I know his coaching and team let him down a lot. But lets not completely blame everything around him and forget how bad Sanchez was performing on a personal level every week. I mean think how absurd it would be to defend Geno and the way he’s playing right now at this moment – thats what people are doing with Sanchez’s play a couple seasons ago. Remember, Sanchez was the Golden Boy when this team was winning playoff games basically despite him, so when the going gets tough you then dont get to lay all the blame at the feet of the organization. It doesnt work that way.
