2019 Movie Rankings: 90 through 81

We have arrived on Day 10 of the 2019 Movie Rankings Countdown has arrived. Over the course of the next 8 weekdays, leading up to the 92nd edition of The Academy Awards, I will be revealing my rankings for all 185 new movies I watched this year.

RANKINGS SO FAR:
Bottom 15 (171-185)
170-161
160-151
150-141
140-131
130-121
120-111
110-101
100-91

The movies are starting to get better as we slowly inch closer and close to the top spot! We have reached the halfway mark and I would suggest checking out most of these movies, regardless of your interests and taste. Without delaying any longer, here are movies 90 through 81...

90) The Secret Life of Pets 2 (66/100): It's a perfectly okay animated animal movie sequel to a perfectly okay animated animal movie. The animation is fun to look at and there is enough charm to give it life, but it's still rather hollow and doesn't stack up with the best of the best in the animated category.

89) Glass (67/100): I am pretty high on 'Glass' compared to both critics and audiences, but it was still a letdown following the unexpected success of 'Split' from M. Night Shyamalan. The first two-thirds of the movie builds considerable intrigue and is quite fun, it gives you some hope that they're going to tie up the trilogy in a great way. Unfortunately, the wheels absolutely come off in every way possible as the movie closes out. Entertaining movie? Sure, but the end derails what could've been an all-around solid effort.

88) Spies In Disguise (67/100): It's a fun time!

But outside of the recognizable voice cast and mid-level entertainment, the movie doesn't offer up much more than that.

87) Motherless Brooklyn (67/100): I say this without much hesitation: 'Motherless Brooklyn' should have been a better movie.

There is some great craft when it comes to acting from a fine cast, but the movie is not well-paced and feels like a bore at times. 'Motherless Brooklyn' gets so caught up in its style and period that it loses sight of its main vision and story and becomes far too muddied to really appreciate it.

86) Gwen (68/100): When it comes to movies not being my thing, anything in the "period horror" category is all the way off my radar. But I quite liked much of what I saw from 'Gwen'!

In terms of grim fear, the movie does a great job of setting the stage making sure you stick with that feeling throughout. My issue with the movie is that it never really keeps you guessing or finds a way to toy with your emotions. What we get is pretty decent, but it's all a little… flat.

85) Bloodline (68/100): Holy shit, Sean William Scott!?

This movie is far out of left field and every field imaginable and caught me completely off guard. 'Bloodline' is batshit crazy and pulls no punches in the process of telling its insane story. The screenplay is sloppy, but it makes up for its faults by taking much-appreciated risks. I'd much rather see a movie stumble while going for it than a movie that plays it safe for mediocre results.

84) Triple Frontier (68/100): Here's the thing with 'Triple Frontier', despite its big cast and some considerable hype, I struggle to call this a "letdown." When it comes to these big-budget Netflix action-adventures, I expect a very "average" movie at best. J.C. Chandor, who has made some fantastic movies, couldn't quite find his footing with the Ben Affleck thrill ride. It's a sloppy, disjointed effort but is entertaining enough to keep you hooked. When you fire up Netflix for 'Triple Frontier', you won't be too upset but don't set the bar too high beforehand.

83) The Beach Bum (69/100): I… I… uh… I sort of liked it?

'The Beach Bum' is a lot to take in, but you have to simply expect that when it comes to any movie from Harmony Korine. I can't say I like everything Korine puts out, but this isn't a movie you should overthink. It's a relaxed, yet crazy, fun time with a cast clearly having an absolute blast on screen.

82) Missing Link (69/100): The studio (Laika) that brought you 'Coraline', 'The Boxtrolls' and 'Kubo and the Two Strings' pumped out another beautifully animated movie with 'Missing Link'. While it looked fantastic, I found the story to be rather average and that I was paying more attention to the look of the movie than what was playing out narratively. The movie, despite a win for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes, lost $80 million at the box office and was responsible for this travesty

How the fuck do you replace the Coca-Cola ICEE? Disgusting move.

81) Anna (70/100): Our first movie on the rankings to enter the "C" letter grade range, 'Anna' isn't close to perfect, but it is a hell of a ride.

I tend to enjoy Luc Besson movies and the critical reviews for this one seemed to be a bit unfair. It does feel similar to very-comparable 'Lucy' but I don't find that to be a bad thing. There is enough in terms of action and thrills to more than hold your interest and the cast is loaded with great names, from Luke Evans to Cillian Murphy, Helen Mirren, and the newcomer with Sasha Luss.
