The Gentlemen: This Movie Is Fucking Awesome

Wait a second, are January movies getting... better? Let's discuss...

Mickey Pearson is an American expatriate who became rich by building a marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he's looking to cash out of the business, it soon triggers an array of plots and schemes from those who want his fortune. (via Google)

Jeff D Lowe (85/100): ‘The Gentlemen’ is a fucking blast, filled with off-the-wall moments and performances, and sticks out amidst the muck of the usual mess of January releases. Guy Ritchie’s newest movie is bold as hell and a wild ride that sets the bar for action-comedy fun in 2020.

Fans of Ritchie’s work will be pleased to hear that this is a fantastic return to form for the director. It has been almost five years since his last critical and audience acclaimed movie in ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ and I thought that movie was just okay. ‘The Gentlemen’ is an awesome experience following up the live-action ‘Aladdin’ and the disastrous ‘King Arthur’ reimagining that Ritchie released a few years back.

The strength of the movie lies in how bold of a story Ritchie puts out there. ‘The Gentlemen’ will throw you for a loop and always have you guessing. It’s a bit too much in some spots, and if you don’t buy into the craziness than the movie might be a bit of a turn-off. But for me, the faults are fine, because, as a whole, the movie has a great balance of both wild action and comedy.

It’s also hard to not like a movie with such a dynamic and likable cast. Look at these names…

I have seen some people say this wasn’t Matthew McConaughey’s best role, but I loved him in this movie. When McConaughey can loosen up and have some fun, it’s usually a good time. Everyone stood out, from Michelle Dockery to the (very handsome) Henry Golding, but I really couldn’t get enough of Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell. There have been so many recent movies with great casts that fail to provide a solid story or screenplay, but ‘The Gentlemen’ delivers in both areas.

This has been a weird January for movies, what is usually a dumping ground for the worst movies of the year ended up supplying us with a few solid releases. ‘The Gentlemen’ is the best of the batch and a must-see on the big screen if you’re looking for one hell of a good time.

KenJac (81/100): This is a return to form for the crime-comedy god Guy Ritchie. Quick and snappy dialogue, a sharp plot, and some wickedly interesting characters. There are definitely a few issues I had with the pacing, but it’s otherwise a blast and a very fun watch.

The cast was incredible from top to bottom. McConaughey had the most McConaughey-type role he could have which worked tremendously in his favor. Hugh Grant was amazing as the out-of-type and vulgar de facto narrator, Fletcher. And Charlie Hunnam? Man, He has put out some stinkers lately that really had me convinced he should just stay on TV. This role proved me wrong. He’s funny, mysterious, and most importantly a fucking missile of a human being. I also thoroughly enjoyed Colin Ferrell as the gym-leader Irishman.

From a technical standpoint, as I mentioned earlier, I had a few issues with the pacing. It was a little all over the place in the first act as things were getting established, but it really hit a stride as it went on. During the actual movie, I liked it more and more with every minute that went by. As it usually goes with Guy Ritchie movies, the dialogue was on fucking point. I was cracking up all over the place at the lines written for these characters that were really richly developed. The action was a bit too shaky-cam for my liking, but chaos was part of the mantra of the film.

Go and watch this movie. It’s funny, the plot is full of amazing twists and turns and the performances are great. Now I’m going to go watch ‘Snatch’, ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ and ‘Layer Cake’ on repeat.
