You Know Things Are Weird When Gilbert Arenas Is The Voice Of Reason In The Durant/Perkins Twitter Fight

on

Like everyone else on the planet I thoroughly enjoyed last night's festivities. It was the perfect distraction at just the right time to help me not think about how pathetic my beloved Celtics looked for the 6th straight game. Obviously it pulled at my heartstrings a little considering Perk will forever be a legend in my eyes for his contribution to the only title I've ever seen, but also Kevin Durant has become a close personal friend of mine this season

so this was a tough one for me. The insults in the back and forth were fairly predictable, but what I most definitely not see coming is Gilbert Arenas of all people coming down from the clouds and actually making some sense. Didn't love the dig at the rebuilding Celts part at the end but I see his point. Even to this day people kill Durant and call him a snake for what he did by going to GS. I never really had a problem with it, and it came at the expense of him coming to Boston. Was it maybe a little eeak that he joined a team that just beat him? I guess? But in today's world where literally all anyone cares about is RINNNGZZZZZ when discussing the legacy of a player, it wasn't all that crazy of a move. Opposing fans didn't like it because Durant didn't join your team and he joined a team that was loaded with homegrown talent. The Warriors front office did what they had to do to create the space, and Durant saw an opportunity to snag that elusive ring, and ended up being the main reason why they won two. It's no different than what the Celts did in 2008 to build a super team, or what the MIA Big 3 did. That's life in today's NBA, and you can bet your ass every star player not named Dame Lillard (who repeatedly refuses he'll ever leave for a super team) would do if they were a player of Durant's stature and needed that elusive ring. It's not like he rode the bench and collected a ring, he earned it.

OKC had their window to win, and the front office fucked it up. That's not on Durant. Would it have been the better story if he won his first ring in OKC? Of course, but as constructed that team wasn't going to win and deep down Durant probably knew that. He looked around and went to the best basketball situation possible. I would get what Perk was saying if Durant stunk in those Finals and had to be carried by Steph/Klay, but that's not at all what happened.

All I know is when we are living in a world where Gilbert Arenas is out here making rational arguments that make you sort of agree with him, we've truly gone off the rails. Hard to find a hole in his argument to be honest.
