All Of A Sudden Nolan Arenado Has a 50/50 Shot Of Being Traded From The Rockies, Wait What?

We are not even a year removed from Nolan Arenado signing his eight year $260 million extension with the Colorado Rockies. Once he signed that, everyone just assumed he'd just finish out his career in Colorado putting up unreal numbers, making ridiculous plays from 3rd base, and really never competing for a World Series ring. Flash forward 10 months and Jon Morosi is out here reporting that there's a 50/50 shot he gets traded. WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Arenado will be 29 in April and is coming off another monster season where he hit 41 bombs, drove in 118 guys, and had a triple slash of .315/.379/.583. He's a fucking machine. That's the guy the Rockies want to trade? It sucks to hear if you're a Rockies fan because Arenado is beloved by that fanbase, but if you're trying to start over and rebuild with some actual pitching prospects then maybe this is the time to do it. From a realistic point of view the Rockies are not going to contend with the current structure of this roster. They need pitching. Lots of it. If the Braves miss out on Donaldson, who is currently mulling over multiple 4 year $100 mill deals, they could easily switch their attention to Arenado. Atlanta's farm system is loaded with talent and could definitely unload the pieces necessary to get this done. Atlanta had always been a spot people thought a Mookie Betts trade could work, but Arenado certainly fits the bill as well. Imagine a core of Acuna, Arenado, Albies, and Freeman for the foreseeable future. Well, fuck me.

50/50 odds are higher than I ever thought we'd hear about an Arenado trade, especially less than a year after signing that mega extension. The month of January could see Nolan, Donaldson, and Kris Bryant playing for different teams. Maybe Mookie also? The free agency part of the offseason is pretty much over aside from a few smaller pieces, but the trade market is about to get cooking. Let the games begin.
