Finally, the True Crime Documentary We Need: 'The Great Brady Heist'

YouTube - “The Great Brady Heist” explores the mysterious final chapter from the greatest Super Bowl ever. The newest documentary in FOX Sports Films’ MAGNIFY series, it chronicles the disappearance of Tom Brady’s jersey following the New England Patriots’ improbable Super Bowl LI comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons.

“The Great Brady Heist” premieres on Saturday, February 1 at 7:00 PM ET on FOX. The film was produced by NFL Films, in association with Religion of Sports.

You can have your documentaries about murderers, weirdo cults, cat torturers, serial killers and Heisman Trophy running backs. I have no use for any of them when the greatest real life crime drama since the JFK assassination has finally gotten the in depth documentary treatment it deserves.

No crime of our lifetimes has played out with so many twists and turns, layers of mystery and even geopolitical intrigue like “The Great Brady Heist” did back in the early part of 2017. In the aftermath of the Patriots comeback win against the Falcons, the euphoria of 28-3 was quickly shattered by the shocking news that Tom Brady’s game jersey was stolen in a crowded, victorious locker room, right out from under the noses of NFL Security. A worldwide manhunt ensued. Surveillance tapes were studied. The internet was scoured for word that somebody might be trying to fence this invaluable piece of history. It was like a cyber age Lindbergh Kidnapping.

And not to signal my own virtue, but I went full sleuth in attempt to track down the perps responsible. Working tirelessly day and night, on no sleep, surviving on nothing but black coffee and amphetamines, ceaselessly pursuing the guilty to bring them to justice.

Eventually the case was cracked. The guilty party was reporter Martin Mauricio Ortega Camberos, who grabbed the sacred artifact and fled to his native Mexico. He was captured largely by a heroic Patriots fan who was not me, but who had bought things from Camberos on the web before and recognized the jersey.

I’m not so petty as to worry about this young man getting all the credit instead of me. Justice is its own reward. I just sleep better knowing Brady’s Super Bowl LIV jersey will be safer in Miami because the thief has been identified. And I’ll be very much looking forward to watching this doc when it airs the night before. Made not only by NFL Films, but by Gotham Chopra, Brady’s business partner on Religion of Sports and the genius behind the series “Tom vs. Time.” So you’ve got the most compelling story of our times involving the most fascinating public figure told by the best TV  producers ever. They might as well just hand them all the Emmys now.
