Daily Mail- Clint Dempsey has revealed he is releasing a rap album after the World Cup.  Dempsey, who scored after 31 seconds in USA’s 2-1 win over Ghana on Monday, spent two weeks before the tournament recording a 13-track album in Los Angeles with the help of rappers and producers from his home town of Nacogdoches, Texas. The album will be called ‘The Redux’ and will be released under Dempsey’s rap name ‘Deuce’. ‘We just were having fun with it and it ended up being an album,’ Dempsey told the Wall Street Journal.  On the album, Dempsey about his journey from rags to riches, being ‘Captain America’ and scoring goals – or, as he says, ‘banging Gs’.

Some people are probably confused by this move.  Wondering why Clint Dempsey would be releasing a hip hop album after the World Cup makes no sense to them.  Well I see what’s happening here and I love it.  You gotta strike when the iron’s hot.  How often do soccer players get this much attention all at once here in America?  I’ll tell you exactly how often, once every four years.  That’s why these guys have to cram as much self promoting into the next month as they possible can.  Dempsey clearly understands that.  There isn’t a bigger hype machine than the World Cup.  Not even Tony Yayo could hype up a rap album as much as the WC.  Will the rap album suck?  Of course but that’s not the point.  He’s just trying to leverage his white hot fame into moving units.  Dempsey’s the only one doing it right if you ask me.  The fact that John “Johnny Futbol” Brooks hasn’t come out with his own clothing line yet is astonishing to me.  Dempsey actually should be doing more.  Don’t stop at releasing a rap album.  While that’s a solid start he needs to make his own cologne, his own cereal, his own clothing line, etc.  Anything and everything that normal athletes pimp year round, soccer players have exactly a month to get their brand name out there.  If part of that brand name is showing the world your rap persona Deuce and dropping an album called The Redux, so be it.

My favorite part of the article:

Fellow rapper and friend Mike Chehadé told the paper that Dempsey’s skills are not to be sniffed at: He said: ‘He’ll just call you sometimes and start free-styling – he doesn’t even say hello … I’m not saying he’s Eminem, but he’s definitely qualified.’

How weird would it be if soccer player Clint Dempsey called you and just started rapping into the phone?
