Da Baby got Live on Saturday Night

Saturday Night Live used to be the epicenter of comedy on television in the 80s. Nowadays, SNL is probably watched more on YouTube than NBC, but the show has maintained pop culture relevancy by highlighting two of the hottest names in entertainment every episode. Saturday night was no different.

Ahead of her Super Bowl Halftime performance, Jennifer Lopez hosted SNL for the third time with musical guest Da Baby. I find most SNL opening monologues to be hard to watch but Jenny from the Block is a consummate professional on stage. In less than 5 minutes, the 50-year-old Bronx native reminded us just how busy she’s been in 2019 AND how great she looked in that green dress she wore to the Grammy’s with Diddy on her arm.

J-Lo was cool, but I’m here to talk about Da Baby. The rapper from Charlotte, North Carolina has been demanding attention since his March album release of Baby on Baby. An album that earned him Grammy nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.

The 27-year-old spitter has a huge personality and loves to feature memorable and meme-able moments in his music videos. Love it or hate it, Da Baby brought his music videos to the Saturday Night Live stage which includes a woman twerking acrobatically and resurrecting famous hip-hop dance crew, the Jabbawockeez.

I love the way Da Baby talks that ratchet shit with a smile on his face. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of that song. In my opinion, the best cut on KIRK (Da Baby’s second studio album) is the intro track but his energy and confidence on stage is infectious.

During his second performance, Mr. Baby performed SUGE, his hit single that landed him those two Grammy nominations I mentioned earlier.

The guy is clearly a star, but his SNL performances suffer the same fate of his most recent project, redundancy.

Overall, I’m giving Da Baby’s first Saturday Night Live performance a B-.
