I don’t get why people are hating on this at all. Isn’t that what sports is all about, bringing people together, bringing communities together, getting a city excited? Good for him for embracing the local team, buying the merch, and partying his dick off. There’s no “right” way to becoming a fan of a team. It reminds me of the Caps Cup run when the streets of DC were packed to the gills for every game. So many new fans out there in Ovi jerseys, that’s what you love to see. And then it becomes a generational thing- those new fans pass down the fandom to their kids, and so on and so on. Winning is how you grow die-hards. It’s how you develop a strong fan base.
I mean shit, I didn’t really care much about baseball until I moved to DC in 2013. I was an O’s fan as a kid, but I kinda just completely stopped caring about baseball. When I moved to DC after being hired by Barstool and I started covering and writing about the Nats, I just started loving the Nats. The team was awesome, the players were a ton of fun to write about, and I lived there and embraced them. It was an untraditional path to becoming a fan of a team, but when you’re in your young 20’s and move to a city, it’s hard *not* to fall in love with the team, especially if you don’t give a fuck about any other team.

And honestly, if you’re over 17 years old, it’s kind of weird to care what sports team a grown man chooses to cheer for. I’m not embarrassed that I grew up an O’s fan, it’s the only team we had. The Nats weren’t there yet, it wasn’t my fault. I’ve never tried to hide where I’m from, but the Nats lured me back to the game and I am so glad they did because this is a ton of fun.
