22 Year Old Amateur Golfer Misses Out On A Spot At The US Open After Ratting Himself Out About An Incorrect Scorecard
Yahoo!- Landon Michelson, a 22-year-old amateur playing in the U.S. Open sectional event in Florida on Monday, had caught a bit of luck. He wasn’t even in the field of 55 players going for four spots at Pinehurst No. 2 next week when Freddie Jacobson pulled out of the qualifier and left a spot open for an alternate. Michelson then went through the always interesting process of dealing with his scorecard. Admitting to the Golf Channel’s Will Gray after his round that his focus probably got in the way of where he thought he was at with his score, the youngster signed for a second-round 70 instead of a 71 as his caddie went to check out how one contender was doing as he was the last that might push Michelson into a playoff for that final U.S. Open spot. Michelson admitted the error.
What an IDIOT this guy is. Golf is a gentlemen’s game to be sure but under this specific set of circumstances, you lie your face off. You don’t even think twice. You just keep your mouth shut, nod politely and potentially earn a trip to one of golf’s biggest events. I would’ve completely understood Landon ratting on himself if this were just a normal tournament without a trip to one of golf’s majors on the line. If it’s a normal tournament and he does what he did, good on him. Way to respect the game. We’d all give him a pat on the back and say “Good job son” and the media still lauds him for his selfless act. But with a chance to play next to golf’s greatest players at Pinehurst No. 2 at a US Open? Kid is an absolute moron for a few reasons. He misses out on playing with the greats, he misses out on being able to say he played in a US Open but most importantly he misses out on becoming a real golfer with sponsorships and everything. That’s the dream and you only get a few (if any) opportunities to make that a reality. Who cares if it’s by way of sneaking in through the back door? You take it and you make the most of it. This could’ve been his big break but he’ll never know. Now instead of being on the fast track to relevancy in the sport he loves Landon will be sitting at home like the rest of us instead of hitting the links with the big boys. Stupid as it gets.
PS- The people saying “He did the right thing” are the worst. Grow up. They’re just saying that to the people writing the story. Behind closed doors I guarantee they’re saying he should have stayed quiet.
